It is a chestnut tree and its scientific name is Castaneo sativa! This tree is from south and west of Europe.

People say that a chestnut tree "takes 300 years to grow up, 300 years to live and 300 years to die". At our school we have 3 chestnuts trees each with a girth about 30m.

Look at the cedar, a Cupressus Lusitanica tree, native to Central America and the Middle East!

First planted in Portugal in the 17th century in the Buçaco Convent woods!

I fancy this tree, it is a cork oak tree! Maybe I prefer the name Quercus Suber. It is a typical tree from the West Mediterranean region.

Cork is a very useful material! It is used for thermal and acoustic insulation.



What is the dog doing?


Look! We have an arbutus tree! Its scientific name is arbutus unedo! Did you know that?

No, I am a dog! But the fruit looks nice!



Lunch!
On my right you see a mulberry tree, or a morus nigra.
The tree has its origins in Asia but can be found everywhere in Portugal.
We have them in our school!




A platanus hybrida or a platanus hispanica is originally from Western Europe!

Be careful! The seeds can cause allergies, especially if you have asthma problems!!



Hmmm!

It is a indian chestnut tree! A bit high for me!!

You will take a long time to reach the top! Its scientific name is very long too: Aesculus hippocastanum I.




An eastern european tree!
From India? hihihihihihi!!
The stone pine tree or pinus pinea! The tree is native to the Mediterranean region. Its fruit only appears when the tree is over 10 years old.
Centuries ago the wood was used in shipbuilding. Nowadays it is widely cultivated for environmental protection such as soil conservation.




This is the birch tree, autochthonous from Serra da Estrela, a mountain in the Centre of Portugal!
Its scientific name is betula alba.
The tree is useful for improving the soil quality.

The walnut tree! The juglans regia tree!
I like to eat walnuts and it is good for the brain, people say.

This is not a walnut! It's a pizza!
