South Carolina has two state mottoes. The seal has two ovals linked by branches. The Palmetto Tree is a symbol of victory from the Revolutionary war. The woman in the second oval is a symbol of hope!

The State Seal
The state seal was the first of South
Carolina's state symbols. It was first
used in 1777, although it looked
different then. It has two ovals that
are joined as one. The left opal as the
"Abimis Opibusque Parati" which is Latin for "Prepared in
Mind and Resouces." The right oval has "Dum Spiro Spero,"
which is Latin for "While I Breathe, I Hope.
The picture of a palmetto tree represents a battle victory
against the British during the Revolutionary War.

Indigo
The South Carolina state color is indigo. It became the state color in 2008. The color was worn by Colonel Moultrie and his soldiers in the Revolutionary War. Indigo means '' from India" or "the Indian." Indigo became the second most important crop next to rice for South Carolina.

The Palmetto Tree is found at the beach. The trunks are made of a fibrous material that allows the tree to bend in strong winds. They also grow good in salt spray and sandy soil. The Palmetto Tree lives about 80-90 years. They can grow to about 80 feet tall.




Bailey
The state bird is called a Carolina Wren. The wren's song is tea-ket-tle, -tea-ket-tle, tea-ket-tle. The bird is small and it has white stripes over it's eyes. The bird was released in 1948.


The Tiger Swalllowtail was named Eastern Tiger Swallowtail in 1994. It is the official butterfly for the state of South Carolina.
The butterfly has four black stripes resembling a tiger. It has four wings and two larger sections called fore wings.
The butterfly can be seen in deciduous woods, along streams, rivers, and wooded swamps. Adult butterflies eat the nectar from a variety of plants, including milkweed, honeysuckle, lilac, and phlox.

The white-tail deer was the official state animal in 1972 . An animal of incredible beauty and power.
White-tail deer are often perfectly leaping over fences with ease. They are good for running quite fast.
They adopt to their surrounding vegetation which varies based on the season and the area.
White-tail deer eat every 4 hours.
*Their colors range from light green to brown.
*When they hold their prey it looks like they are praying.


State insect: Praying Mantis
*Adult mantis can be up to 7cm in length.
*Only mantis males can fly.

Many striped bass weigh about 30 to 40 pounds. South Carolina's Santee Cooper Lakes are original for striped bass to live in.
In 1972, the striped bass became the state fish of South Carolina. Back in 2009, a 63 pound bass was caught. It was the biggest caught in South Carolina.

Loggerhead Sea Turtle
Fact 1: South Carolina designated the Loggerhead Turtle as the official State Reptile by Act Number 588 of 1988.
Fact 2: The Loggerhead Turtles are federally listed as threatened.
Fact 3: Adult males can weigh about 250 pounds.

Bottlenose dolphins are found worldwide in temperate and tropical water.
The Bottlenose Dolphin was named the State Marine Mammal by Act Number 58 of 2009. They are carnivores, eating primarily fish and squid.
State Shell- Lettered Olive
1. The Lettered Olive became the state shell in 1984.
2. The color of it is reddish pinkish.
3. It has marks on it that look like letters of the alphabet and that is why it is named the Lettered Olive.
