Did you know that Between 5500 and 3500 BCE, Egypt developed an urban kingdom and became a major power in the Mediterranean. The Nile River made this possible, as predictable floods spread nutrient-rich silt across thousands of acres of farmland, making possible an agricultural surplus of crops like barley and wheat.

By around 300 CE, the kingdom of Aksum replaced Nubia as the regional powerhouse in Eastern Africa. Aksum was a unique ancient African civilization because king Ezana adopted Christianity in the early 4th century and made it the state religion. As a result, Aksum became one of the world's earliest Christian civilizations.

Around 1050 CE, the Empire of Ghana began to come under pressure from the Muslims to the north to convert to Islam. The Kings of Ghana refused and soon came under constant attacks from Northern Africa. At the same time, a group of people called the Susu broke free of Ghana. Over the next few hundred years, Ghana weakened until it eventually became part of the Mali Empire.

Did you know that The Empire of Mali was formed when a ruler named Sundiata Keita united the tribes of the Malinke peoples. He then led them to overthrow the rule of the Soso. Over time, the Mali Empire became stronger and took over surrounding kingdoms including the Empire of Ghana.

Hi! I'm Alex, here to tell you all about Africa's natural resources! The African continent is home to an abundance of natural resources that include diamonds, gold, oil, natural gas, uranium, platinum, copper, cobalt, iron, bauxite, silver, and more!
Here is a fact about Bauxite, one of Africa's natural resource. Bauxite is one of the most abundant resources in West Africa. Foreign multinational mining companies are deeply invested in unearthing Aluminium ore bauxite from African countries.

Africa's diamonds, as the largest producer of diamonds in the world, diamond mining in Africa is woven into the history of the continent. At once the source of immense wealth, and extreme poverty, the history of diamond mining and the future of the diamond mining industry in Africa is a hot topic around the world.

Most of the cobalt in the world is mined in Africa. It is mainly produced as a by-product of platinum and nickel mining operations. Most of the cobalt in the world is sourced from the African country the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The type of clothing worn across Africa varies from north to south, and by religious beliefs and traditional customs. Some cultures wear colourful attire, while others wear less colour but include shiny threads in their dressing with minimal jewellery.

African music is as diverse as the people, and has also been influenced by music from the western world. Traditional music in southern Africa usually involves drums and singing, and such instruments as the thumb piano accompanied by rattles made from some dried fruit or vegetable with seeds inside.

The Zulu people are South Africa’s largest ethnic group. It is estimated that between ten and eleven million people live in the province of KwaZulu-Natal. During 19th and 20th much of South Africa was under apartheid and the Zulu people were classed as third-class citizens often suffering from discrimination. Today they have equal rights along with all other citizens.

Everybody has heard of the 1958 novel Things Fall Apart, the groundbreaking account that began Chinua Achebe’s path to being one of Africa’s most prominent literary figures. The book has sold over 12 million copies and been translated into more than 50 languages. Chinua Achebe fought colonialism and Western biases through his writing, but more importantly he sought to revive literature and to rewrite the story of a continent that had long been told by Western voices.
