TEKS: Grade 5 (4) Algebraic reasoning. The student applies mathematical process standards to develop concepts of expressions and equations. The student is expected to:
(H) represent and solve problems related to perimeter and/or area and related to volume.

One day in Polygon City there was a group of friends hanging out at the Binomial Park. Sammy Square, Charlie Circle, Rex Rectangle, and Trey Triangle.

The group of friends were waiting at the park for one more friend. Charlie Circle looked around at all his friends and realized that Travis the Trapezoid was missing! The group of friends split up and looked around the park for Travis.
“He’s not on the slide!” yelled Sammy Square. “He isn’t on the swings!” Shouted Charlie Circle. Where could he be?

The friends gathered around worried about Travis Trapezoid. Wondering where he could be... Then out of nowhere DR.CUBE jumped out in front of the friends. “Dr.Cube?!?” all the shapes yelled. “Yes, it’s me Dr. Cube! If you want to find your friend. You must complete the quest and solve the problems. Then he VANISHED! Leaving only a map...

“OH NO!!!!” They shouted. Rex Rectangle picked up the map. “The map shows us the way to our friend! BUUUTTTTT parts are missing.” (picture of the map) “It says we have to start here?” They all look around confused. Then out of nowhere...

One of Dr. Cube’s minions appearred! “AHHHH!”
They all screamed. *In one fast motion he took a friend* “If you want to continue you must solve the perimeter of Sammy Square! " They all looked at each other shocked. “Does anyone know the formula for the perimeter of a square?” asked Trey Triangle.

"This is a job for the formula BOOK!" Rex Shouted. Everyone gathered around the book to find the perimeter formula for Sammy Square.

Charlie Circle asked, “How long is Sammy’s side?” Sammy yelled from the hands of Dr.Cubes minion, “My sides are 8cm long!” The group goes to work. Sammy is a square so all of his 4 sides are equal. They look at the formula to see how to solve for the perimeter they have to multiply Sammys’ side length by 4. Charlie Circle pulled out a notebook and pencil to solve the problem!
He wrote: the formula P=4*s
And plugged in the numbers
“4 times 8 is 32!”
"The answer is 32!" Charlie Circle shouted.

“UUURRRRRGGGG! 32 is the correct answer. You have earned your friend back, now look at your map for your destination.” The minion said.
The friends follow the map to the Pentagon.

When the friends arrive at the Pentagon they look around for their next problem. As they’re walking they hear a BOOM! They look around and see that Trey Triangle is missing!?!? It appears he has fallen in a HOLE!!

IT'S ONE OF DR. CUBES TRAPS!!!!!! They go look for a ladder. When they find one it’s locked. “We have to enter a code?” Sammy Square said. Behind the lock is a letter, it says “you must find the area of Trey Triangle”.

Rex pulled out his formula book again and found the formula for the area of a triangle.
A=bh/2
Rex told his friends the area of a triangle is base times height divided by 2. The friends run back to the hole and asked Trey. “What is your height? And how long is your base?” Trey yelled up at them “My base is 6 cm wide and my height is 4 cm tall!”

Rex plugged the numbers into the problem 6*4/2 6 times 4 is 24! Now divide by 2 equals.. 12!!!!!! YAYAY!!! They cheer! They run to the lock and enter the code.. BEEP BEEP BEEP. It unlocked! They grab the ladder and use it to save Trey Triangle! YAY!!!
“Let's keep moving!”

They gather around the map. “It looks like we have to head to the Number Bridge!” said Charlie. They make their way to the number bridge.
