There once was a girl named Harriet Tubman. Harriet was born in Maryland in 1820. She was born into a family of slaves. A slave is someone who does the chores of another person.

No slave liked being a slave. They had to do hard work in cold and hot temperatures! They didn't get treated well, either.

One day, Harriet decided that she had enough of being a slave. She made a plan to escape Maryland and run off to a state with no slaves.

Harriet ran away one night. Running away was very dangerous. There are many big and scary animals all around you, you don't have much food or water, you don't have a shelter, and worst of all, you could get caught by a slave hunter.

Slave hunters were people that stayed up at night looking for slaves that were trying to run away. If you got caught by a slave hunter, you could get in big trouble. Even though it was very scary running away, Harriet was not scared. She believed in herself. She kept on going.

It took Harriet 1 whole week to get from Maryland to Pennslyvania. Harriet was finally free! She was no longer a slave! Harriet thought that this would make her happy...

...but it didn't.

Harriet was sad at the thought of her family and other slaves still having to work all day in the hot sun. So Harriet did something that no other slave had ever done...

...she went back home
