MATTER

Any substance that has mass and takes up space by having volume. There are three main states of matter: solid, liquid, and gas.
ELEMENTS
Substances that are composed of only one kind of atom

Copper is an element that can be found in electrical wiring around the house as well as in some water pipes
Carbon is an element that can be found in pencils that may be lying around the house.

COMPOUNDS
Organic compounds: compounds that contain the element carbon. An example is soap.
Inorganic compounds: compounds that do not contain the element carbon. An example is water.
Two or more elements chemically combined

MIXTURES
Heterogeneous mixture: a mixture made up of more than one phase. An example is vegetable soup.
Homogeneous mixture: materials that are made up of one phase. An example is salt.

matter that contains two or more different materials
SOLID

Solid is a state of matter with atoms that are closely packed together. This makes the solid have a fixed shape and volume. Solids are normally firm, hard, or compact since those atoms are so tightly packed. A example of a solid that can be found around the house is wood. Wood can be found as tables, chairs, etc.
LIQUID

Liquid is a state of matter with atoms that flow and take the shape of the container that it is in. That means liquids have no fixed shape but does have a fixed volume. An example of a liquid that can be found in the house is milk. Milk can be used to drink or to put in cereal.
GAS

Gas is a state of matter with no fixed shape or volume. The atoms in gas are spread so far apart that they do not really have an attraction so they fly around at rapid speeds. An example of gas is helium. Helium can be found in helium balloons or in blimps that can be found flying around in the sky.
CHEMICAL CHANGES
Changes that make a new substance

One example of a chemical change in the house is baking a cake. The heat energy causes a chemical change in the cake ingredients.
Another example of a chemical change that can be found in the house is rusting. Rusting can be found on anything with iron. Rusting occurs due to an exposure of oxygen and moisture for a long period of time.
