SET INDUCTION:
Prior to the start of the class, the teacher writes a list of common and proper nouns on sticky notes and places them around the classroom.
The teacher will play a quick game called “Noun – Not a Noun”. Students will be given a word and if it is a noun, they will say. “Yes Ma’am” and if it is not a noun, they will say, “No Ma’am”. Example; bed, house, walk, laugh, car, apple, small, jump,
The teacher will correct any misconceptions. If a student misidentifies a word, have him or her go through the noun checklist. Is it a person, a place or a thing? After, students will be told that today’s class will be about two types of nouns: Common Nouns and Proper Nouns.

What is a common noun and proper noun?
The teacher will give the students the definitions for common and proper nouns, emphasizing that proper nouns are specific while common nouns are not.
Activity:
Circle the common nouns
The teacher will write a sentence on the whiteboard that contains a common noun.
Example; The boys love to play.
Have students come up and circle the common noun in the sentence. Each child is given a chance. The teacher will correct any misconceptions. If a student misidentifies a word, the teacher will ask the class to assist with correcting the student
Activity:
Underline the proper nouns
The teacher will write a sentence on the whiteboard that contains a proper noun.
Example; Mark loves to play.
Have students come up and underline the proper noun in the sentence. Each child is given a chance. The teacher will correct any misconceptions. If a student misidentifies a word, the teacher will ask the class to assist with correcting the student.
Activity:
Scavenger Hunt
Students will be placed into groups of four.
Sticky notes each depicting one common or proper noun will be placed around the classroom.
students will move around and collect as many nouns as they can. They will then return to their group and place the nouns into the correct categories.
The team with the most correctly placed nouns will be declared the winners
