As Cecy walked home from school one day in October, she remembered that her favorite event was very soon.

The Pacific Grove Butterfly Parade!

Cecy got home and started to think of all the cool things the parade had. Last year they had balloons, costumes, and even a band!

Cecy was even more excited to see a real life monarch butterfly!

Cecy's teacher had talked about how they migrated to Pacific Grove every year when her teacher was younger.

Cecy just realized she had never seen a monarch butterfly in real life!

But she had seen a sign for a butterfly home, or sanctuary. Maybe she would go ask the scientists there if they had seen any butterflies.

Cecy walked to the museum, which was right by her house.

There was the butterfly sign Cecy remembered seeing!

Cecy walked into the building.

"Welcome to the Monarch Sanctuary, how can I help you?" said the scientist.

"I have a question about the monarch butterflies", said Cecy, "where did they go?"

"The monarch butterflies stopped coming here", the scientist said sadly. "The climate where they lived got too hot, and the plants they used dried up".

"Oh no! Is there anything we can do to help the butterflies?" Cecy asked.

"We're trying to plant more of the plants they live in, called milkweed. We also need to stop using fossil fuels and find other sustainable ways to get energy. Follow me, I'll show you", the scientist said.
