Dedicated to the Australian paperbark trees with their soft, delicately layered bark.

I come across a stately tree
With layered, shaggy bark.
A secret door to other worlds.
Oh, do I dare embark?

The stairs go down into the depths,
I tremble as I tread.
My wobbly feet, my mouth is dry,
I fear what lies ahead.

A labyrinth within the earth,
A maze beneath the soil.
A myriad of choices
Causes such acute turmoil!

The flame, it shivers scattering light
Upon the pearly rock.
A drip, drip, drip and echoing
Just like a ticking clock.

When suddenly a cavern
Woos me from my dark cocoon.
The crystal chandeliers,
The citrine columns, sharply hewn.

Then without noise a man appears,
His nose is rather long.
He winks and grins, his countenance
Somehow a little wrong.

On silver platter he presents
A charming crown of gold.
The amethysts, the tourmaline,
The sapphires are so bold!

I look into his eager eyes,
I feel my pulse, it quicken.
I lay the jewels upon my head,
A gown upon me's slidden.

'Why princess, I must bow to you
And take you to my king.
An honored guest, you are so blessed,
He'd love to hear you sing!'

My candlelight, he blows it out
And leads me t'wards a tunnel.
His gas lit lamp sways squeakily,
His gait ungainly shuffle.

We round the bend and oh what spread
Before us tempts our palates!
Souffles and sauces, salmon steaks,
Crisp bread with soup of carrot.
The silvery spoons, the goblets strewn
Upon the silken cloth.
Round bowls of sweets, tall jars of blooms,
The caviar like froth.

I curtsy to His Majesty,
My face a little flushed.
His eyes are dark, his lips are full,
He's pining for my trust.
'Sit down my dear, what have we here,
A darling little hand.'
I'm hypnotized, he warms my blood,
Am I in wonderland?
