Most of us do our best, we reuse containers and cartons . Yet our drawers are overflowing with plastic bags. We've become dependent on them, and often we end up using them, then throwing them in the bin.

BUT what happens next?...

1.LANDFILL

The plastic is taken to a landfill. While it is compressed by a layer of other garbage, rainwater flows through the waste and absorbs the water-soluble compounds it contains, and some of these are highly toxic.

The rubbish create a harmful stew called "leachate" which can move into groundwater, soil and streams, poisoning ecosystems and harming wildlife.

[A "leachate" is a liquid that takes the substances from the material through which it passed often making the liquid harmful or poisonous].

2.POLLUTION

The plastic bags blow away in the wind. International research shows at least 1000 bags escape from landfill every day. Each year up o 100.000 rubbish trucks worth of plastic is carried into the ocean by major rivers.

Most plastics don't biodegrade, which means they're destined to break down into smaller and smaller pieces called micro plastics, which rotate in the sea eternally.
