One morning a young boy named John was playing around on the school playground during recess. None of the other kids wanted to play with John due to how he played. He only cared about what he wanted to do, got into everyone's games and tried changing it, cut everyone and couldn't wait his turn, and threw temper tantrums over everything that happened to him while playing.

Everyone looked at him differently because he was the "bad apple". John would fidget around in class, lose focus in class, forget things he needed to do, and made mistakes on his work.

After school Johnny got picked up by his mother and went home to play with his four "friends". No one knew who these people were but he called them Alex, David, Henry, and Daniel. He always had day dreams with them.

His mother got worried and took him to the doctors where he met with Dr. Kliener. Dr. Kliener used a behavior rating scale to test Johnny. Right then and there Johnny's life had changed, he was diagnosed with ADHD.

ADHD is one of the most common disorders in children. It carries a high rate of problems such as oppositional defiant disorder, conduct disorder, and mood/anxiety disorders.
Dr. Kliener explained ADHD is really common but can also lead to other more serious disorders such as defiant and conduct disorder which are more violent. He also went on to say it affects around 4%-12% of all children in the world. So Johnny is not at all the "odd one" after all.

How do you know Johnny has ADHD and not another type of disorder doctor?
Dr. Kliener explained poor functioning in preschool appears to be related to symptoms of ADHD.
Johnny's mother looked up the main treatments for ADHD and found three highly used ones. Methylphenidate, Clonidine, and a Placebo Treatment. His mother found clonidine appeared to be most helpful for impulsivity and hyperactivity and methylphenidate appeared to be most helpful for inattention.

Now it was time to see what subtype Johnny has. First he can be the inattentive subtype, he would have to meet six or more symptoms of inattention.
Does he often fail to give close attention to details or makes careless mistakes in activities?
Does he often have trouble holding attention on tasks or activities?
Does he not seem to listen when spoken to directly?
?

Johnny can then be the hyperactive and impulsive subtype. He also has to meet six or more symptoms, To start, does he fidget or tap his hands or feet, or squirms in seat?
Is Johnny unable to play or take part in leisure activities quietly?
Does Johnny talks excessively?
Does he often have trouble waiting his turn?
