To a wonderful and talented woman, Gwendolyn Brooks.

Gwendolyn Brooks was a poet and teacher in the mid 1900's. Her poetry was centered around the types of lives that African Americans lived in the city.
In 1950, Gwendolyn Brooks was awarded the Pulitzer Prize. She was the first African American poet to be awarded this prize.

As a teenager, Gwendolyn experienced racial prejudice. Although this was a difficult experience for her, it inspired her work later on in life.
By the time she graduated from Wilson Junior College, Gwendolyn had already written and published work. This was not the first work she had published though.

At age 13, Gwendolyn had published a poem to a children's magazine. This was not it for her teenage publications. At 16 years of age, she had published seventy-five poems. A huge accomplishment was submitting work to the local leading African American newspaper.
Early on in her career, Gwendolyn worked as a secretary to support herself and her writing. She was able to continue her writing and attend workshops.

From 1945 through 1949, she published popular works. One of those works being a book of poetry she had written, A Street in Bronzeville. The second being, Annie Allen. These books being about the urban lives of the black community.
Ten years later, Ms. Brooks decided to become an instructor on creative writing. She instructed creative writing at Columbia College, Chicago State University, Northeastern Illinois, Columbia University and the Univeristy of Wisconsin. While teaching, she still pursued her writing and continued to publish her works.
