In the early 1900's, around 1920, there was a time period called the Harlem Renaissance where many African American artists were celebrated.
The things that were celebrated included music, dances, books, poetry, sports, paintings, and even more!
One of these artists was a poet named Helene Johnson.
Helene Johnson was born on July 7, 1906 in New York. She was raised by her mother.

Before becoming the popular poet, Helene attended a college in Boston, called Boston University. After finishing college, Helene moved to Harlem, New York.
Once Helene moved to New York, she began writing poetry, this was around the beginning of the Harlem Renaissance. People loved her poetry and it was even featured in magazines.







She won awards for her poetry. Some of her award-winning poetry was featured in The Opportunity.

She won 2nd and 4th place for her poetry!
In 1929, Helene decided to return to Boston and she stopped sharing her poetry with the public.
