For the last few weeks Mrs. Evans' class has been discussing Black History Month.

"For homework tonight each of you will pick a famous African American author and write a short speech about them to present tomorrow in class," said Mrs. Evans.

After class, Mrs. Evans' students talk in the hallway about what author they are going to choose.

Greyson, David, Susie, and Paige have a lot to do before school tomorrow.

So Greyson, what author are you picking?

I think I'm going to write about Maya Angelou.

On her way home, Susie decides to pick Harriet Jacobs as her African American author of choice.

As soon as she arrives at home, she goes straight to her room to start writing her speech for class the next day.

Harriet Jacobs was born into slavery on February 11, 1813. Jacobs did not receive her freedom until 1852.

David decides that he is going to write about one of his favorite African American writers Langston Hughes.

He decides to ask his mom if she knows anything interesting about Langston Hughes since she is a college English professor.

Hey mom, what is something interesting about Langston Hughes?

Hmm, did you know that Langston Hughes was known as the leader of the Harlem Renaissance?

After doing some research, Greyson decides to write his speech about Zora Neale Hurston.

He finds an interesting video about her on the internet and decides to watch it.

I can't believe she was buried in an unmarked grave after all that she accomplished.

Paige heads to the library to use the computer and find some books about Maya Angelou.

Her favorite book is I Know Why the Caged Bird SIngs so she is very excited to do this presentation.

I didn't know that Maya Angelou was the first African American woman to have a nonfiction best seller.

The next day, all the students arrive to class followed by Mrs. Evans.

"Alright class, I can't wait to hear all your presentations," says Mrs. Evans.

"Any volunteers to go first?"
