Cognitive and Language Development Milestones Picture Book

It is important for Johnny's development that he meet certain developmental milestones. His teacher has identified four cognitive and four language milestones for him to meet. In order to achieve this goal, she has scheduled a day full of fun activities.

COGNITIVE MILESTONES
1. Sorting of shapes and colors
2. Plays simple make believe games
3. Completes puzzles with 3-4 pieces
4.Copies a circle with pencil or crayon (CDC, n.d., para. 5)



LANGUAGE MILESTONES
1. Follows instructions with 2-3 steps
2. Knows names of body parts
3.Carries on a conversation using 2-3 sentences
4. Can name most familiar things (CDC, n.d., para. 4)



8:00 am
Milestone Practiced - Follows instructions with 2-3 steps.
Activity - Breakfast
Johnny and his teacher talk about the instructions for breakfast. She lets him know that he must sit quietly and pass the food around the table taking 1 of each item (egg, fruit, toast)

8:30 am
Milestone Practiced - Knows names of body parts.
Activity - Circle Time
Johnny and his classmates sing Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes and practice touching each of the corresponding body parts.

9:00 am
Milestone Practiced - Can name most familiar things.
Activity - Center Based Play Time
Johnny moves from one center to another, while exploring and his teacher asks him to identify the items he is playing with to increase familiarity with them.

10:00 am
Milestone Practiced - Plays simple make believe games.
Activity - Imaginative Play Time
Johnny dresses up as his favorite character, a police officer, and engages with the other children in his cops and robbers make believe scenario.

10:30 am
Milestone Practiced - Follows instructions with 2-3 steps.
Activity - Snack Time
Johnny and his teacher talk about the instructions for snack time. She lets him know that he must sit quietly, take one snack and one cup of milk, then throw them away when he is done.

11:00 am
Milestone Practiced - Carries on a conversation using 2-3 sentences.
Activity - Story Time
The whole class reads a story and the teacher asks Johnny to tell her about his favorite part, asking questions to keep the conversation going.
12:00 pm
Milestone Practiced - Follows instructions with 2-3 steps.
Activity - Lunch Time
Johnny and his teacher talk about the instructions for lunch time. She lets him know that he must sit quietly and take one spoonful of diced chicken, carrots and potatoes.
