Jackie Robinson was born on January 31st 1919. When he was young, his father left his family, leaving his mother with the difficult task of raising five children alone. Shortly after his father left, his family was ordered off of their land. This lead to Jackie's mother moving herself and her children Jackie, Frank, Mack, Edgar and Willa Mae to California to live with their Aunt and Uncle.

Growing up, Jackie loved to play sports. He enjoyed Baseball, Football, Track, and Basketball. Jackie was also extremely intelligent and got into UCLA. Jackie played all four sports for UCLA.

In 1941, Jackie had to drop out of UCLA due to financial difficulties. He was then forced to join the US army, and this is where Robinson begins to fight racial inequality.
Jackie served in the US army for 2 years. In 1944, he was kicked out after refusing to go to the back of a segregated bus.

After returning home, Jackie got back into playing baseball. In 1945, he was offered a professional contract with the Kansas City Monarchs, a team in the Negro Leagues which he accepted.
While playing in the Negro Leagues, Jackie was scouted by the Brooklyn Dodgers. The Dodgers were looking for an African American player to join their team, but they needed someone who was strong enough to handle backlash and fight racial injustice. Jackie ensured the Dodgers that he was strong enough for this challenge, and eventually signed with Brooklyn.
