The best part of every student's day at Clarksville Elementary School was recess, but this was especially true for John. There were so many different activities to choose from! Some days John would play kickball, other days he would swing on the swing sets, but his favorite thing to do at recess was to play on the monkey bars.

    When it came to the monkey bars, John could be mean to the other girls who also loved the monkey bars because he did not like to share.

    “Get off of the monkey bars, I want to play on them today!” he would shout at Suzie and Sally. Both of the girls would get really sad when John would talk to them that way.

    “I own these monkey bars. No one is allowed to play on them when I want to,” John announced to his classmates.

    The next day when the students were sprinting out of the door for recess, John proclaimed that he was going to play on the monkey bars and the others were not allowed to play on the same equipment. Both Suzie and Sally looked down in dismay, but John felt smug and happy. He did not feel this way for long because much to everyone’s surprise, there were zoo animals all over the playground! Giraffes on the kickball field, penguins on the swing set, and much to John's surprise, monkeys on the monkey bars!

    John was angry that he could not play on his favorite playground equipment. When he tried to go near the monkeys, they would not even let him get close.

    “Hey! You monkeys need to get off of my monkey bars,” shouted John.

    The monkeys shooed him away, obviously not wanting John to play where they were playing.

"It's not fair that the monkeys get to play on the monkey bars and I don’t get to. Why will they not let me play?” John asked Suzie and Sally. “They need to learn how to share.”
