One cool January night in Georgia in 1929, a little baby was born. His
parents, Martin and Alberta, were so proud of their little bundle of joy,
never imagining that this little boy would grow up to be Martin Luther
King Jr., leader of the civil rights movement.

Martin had a happy childhood growing up with his two siblings. He
was a bright student in school and also enjoyed going to church
where his father was the pastor.

After Martin graduated high school, he went to Morehouse College in
Atlanta, Georgia. Only boys go to Morehouse College and all of them
are African-American like Martin.

Martin wanted to become a pastor like his father so he went to a
seminary in Pennsylvania after graduating from college. A seminary is a
school where people go to learn to be a pastor.

After becoming a pastor, Martin married a woman named Coretta
Scott. Together they had four children, two boys and two girls.
Then, Martin moved his family to Montgomery, Alabama.

In the Southern United States during Martin's time, African-Americans
were not treated equally by Whites. For one thing, African-Americans
had to sit in the back of buses. Martin did not think this was fair and
decided to do something about it.

Martin decided to lead the African-Americans in a boycott of buses. A
boycott is when people stop doing something to make a point. African-
Americans stopped riding buses to show the bus companies that they
needed the money from the African-Americans' tickets. Important people
paid attention to the boycott and a new law was passed that said that
African-Americans could sit wherever they wanted on buses.

After the success of the boycott, Martin became a hero to the African-
American community. He started to travel all over the United States
helping African-Americans live better lives by advocating for equal rights.

In 1963, in front of the White House where the president lives, Martin gave a famous
speech called "I Have A Dream". Martin spoke about dreaming that one day his
children would have the same opportunities as White children. The next year, he won
the Nobel Peace Prize, a prize that is given each year to one person in the world that
has worked hard for peace.
