
Harriet Tubman was born in Maryland, Indiana. She was originally born into slavery but later escaped slavery in 1849.
Harriet used a system of safe houses to travel over 90 miles north to Pennsylvania to gain her freedom legally.
In 1950, Harriet Tubman helped guide her first family to freedom using a system called The Underground Railroad.
The Underground Railroad was a network of secret routes and safe houses established in the United States. It was used by enslaves African-Americans to escape to free states.
Over the next 10 years, Harriet Tubman led more than 300 people to freedom.
Harriet Tubman later became a leader in the abolitionist movement, and during the Civil War she was a spy for the federal forces and a nurse.
Harriet Tubman was a brave and courageous woman that changed the life of hundreds of enslaved African-Americans. Although she died March 10, 1913 her legacy will reign forever.
