Once upon a time there was a girl named Sarah. She lived with her parents, and they were a happy family.

One day, Sarah came home from school and realized that her parents were gone.

She found a note on the kitchen counter.

Many years ago, I saved your parents lives. They agreed to give me their first-born child for sparing them. Then, you were born and they hid you. I finally found where you live, but now there is something I want more than you. I took your parents, and you'll need to do this if you ever want to see them again: go to all the planets in the solar system, and bring me back something from each one.

The Witch

Sarah got on a rocket and left Earth.

Sarah was wondering if she needed to go to the Sun, but then she remembered the note said to go to "all the planets." The Sun is a star, so Sarah did not need to go to the Sun.

Star: bright ball of hot gases that provides thermal (heat) and light energy

Sarah used an acronym she learned in class to remember the names of all the planets.

Planets: large natural objects that orbit (travel around) the Sun.

First, Sarah went to Mercury: the first planet in the solar system and the first of the rocky planets. She grabbed a rock from the surface to bring to the witch.

Next, Sarah went to Venus: the second planet in the solar system. She grabbed a rock from the surface to bring to the witch.

Earth is the third planet in the solar system. Since Earth was Sarah's home planet and she already had a rock from there, she continued on her journey.

As Sarah passed Earth, she saw the moon orbiting Earth.
