Culture may be considered as all the traditional practices, that have been passed down from one generation to another.
As a result of the diversity of our Caribbean Society our cultural heritage is one that has been impacted by various groups. Cultural Integration, which means that in many circumstances the cultural practices we have now, have been influenced by those different ethnic groups. These groups would have inhabited and shaped our population many years ago.

These groups include The Amerindian Population which we know as the Tanios "Arawak's", the Kalinago "Caribs", the Maya, European Settlers , The African slaves, the East Indians and the Chinese, have all contributed to the diversity and customs of our Caribbean region.
When we speak of diversity, we speak of the different ethnic groups, their beliefs and customs that are found within our Caribbean Society.

Cultural penetration, also occurred when one group may have influenced others, for example when the planters force their religious ideologies and language on the enslaved ( preventing them from practicing their own). Other instances where cultural penetration can be seen, would be when the European masters used the traditional bush medicine of the Africans to heal their sick and themselves.

In some instances, because of the mixing of cultures by these groups with each other, it led to Culture Assimilation.
Cultural Assimilation occurs when more than one culture influences a society and the result is the formation of a new culture.
Examples of this can be seen in the formation f the Spiritual Baptist and Rastafarian religions of the Caribbean. Our music and dance have also been culturally assimilated. Genres of music such as Spouge ( Barbados ), Calypso found through out the Caribbean and Reggae (created In Jamaica) are all examples of cultural assimilation.
Customs may be defined as traditional things we are accustom doing, the norms, behaviors and ways that are a recognized part of our Caribbean society.
In the Caribbean society our custom practices are displayed in our:
Religion, music, cuisines, language, festivals, arts, crafts and other aspects of society.

We must remember that even though things are rapidly changing some things and words have been here for quite a while Canoes and Hammocks created by the indigenous people are still enjoyed up to today .
Musical instruments such as the drums that our African ancestors incorporated in, dance and festivals have passed down to our present generation this is known as Cultural Retention.

Many younger people may divert towards the cultural practices of the West and other European dominated nations. In our Caribbean society we have our own unique and beautiful culture.
