The Picture of Dorian Gray
Oscar Wilde
Dorian is an extremely handsome, impressionable, and wealthy young gentleman. Under the influence of Lord Henry
Dorian becomes extremely concerned with the transience of his beauty and begins to pursue his own pleasure above all else.
Íris, 9E
In Dorian's study
In Victorian London a well-known artist Basil Hallward meets Dorian Gray who sits for several portraits.

Lord Henry is a man possessed of “wrong, fascinating, poisonous, delightful theories.”
He is a charming talker, a famous wit, and a brilliant intellect.
His cynical seductive conversation leads Dorian to fall completely under his spell.
Dorian arrives at the studio, and Basil reluctantly introduces him to Lord Henry.
A poor, beautiful, and talented actress with whom Dorian falls in love.
Sibyl's true love for Dorian makes her realize the falseness of acting and pretending emotions onstage.
She kills herself after Dorian's decision of not loving her any longer.

James is Sybil's brother. A sailor who spends some years in the colonies. He's totally motivated by love and revenge. He adores his sister, Sibyl, and swears to kill anyone that hurts her:
"He is gone," murmured Sibyl sadly. "I wish you had seen him."
Over the next few weeks, Lord Henry’s influence over Dorian grows stronger. He decides to live a life dedicated to the pursuit of pleasure. He falls in love with Sibyl Vane, a young actress who performs in a theatre in London’s slums. He adores her acting.
Sybil in turn, refers to him as “Prince Charming” and refuses to heed the warnings of her brother, James Vane, that Dorian is no good for her.

Lord Henry's wife, Lady Victoria
In the world of upper-class erotic intrigue, she is 'usually in love with somebody'.
She offers a bolder challenge to the status quo than any of the men in the novel.
Alan Campbell is a scientist whom Dorian knew intimately once, but grows like many others to despise Dorian and doesn’t want anything to do with the death of Basil. Dorian blackmails him and he unhappily makes Basil's body disappear and commits suicide not long after.
