Duffy is not like most other puppies. He is a very special puppy. This was because he was born to be a very super important helper.
He was born at a place called Eyes, Ears, Nose, and Paws in North Carolina. Duffy was much smaller than his brother and sister Labrador Retriever puppies. But that did not stop him from being just as curious and adventerous as his siblings! He ran around the yard, played tug-o-war with the volunteers, and ate yummy treats when he was a good boy.
When Duffy was five months old, he began his training. Dogs born at Eyes, Ears, Nose, and Paws are trained to help others. They are called Service Dogs.
Service dogs are individually trained to do work or perform tasks for the benefit of an individual with a disability.
They can help people in wheelchairs, those who are blind, those with Autism, people who have seizures, diabetes, and many other disabilities!
They are super dogs!
Duffy had to learn how to do special tasks like open doors, cabinets, refrigerators, and get specific items when his trainers told him to. He was the brightest dog in his training class!
Duffy was also being specially trained to alert patients with type 1 diabetes when their blood sugars were low or high.
He nudges the patients with his nose or uses his paw to alert them of this.
In Florida, Sophia was anxiously awaiting her trip to North Carolina. She is traveling with her dad to Eyes, Ears, Nose, and Paws to hopefully get matched with a service dog! She had been waiting two years for this day.
Sophia has type 1 diabetes, a disease where her pancreas does not make any insulin and she needs shots to survive.
She also has to be careful that her blood sugar levels do not get too high or too low or else she could be in danger.
When Sophia was 8 years old she was very thirsty, tired, and sick for a long time.
She went to the doctor's office where she was diagnosed with the disease. She has to monitor everything she eats or drinks and make sure she gives herself the right amount of insulin to keep her safe and healthy!
When her blood sugar gets too low, she feels dizzy, lightheaded, weak, and groggy. She needs to drink a juice or have something with sugar in it right away!
When her blood sugar is too high, she may feel tired, cranky, sweaty, or thirsty. It is important for her to take more insulin shots and drink water.
Even though she is very careful with taking care of herself, she still has very scary moments when her blood sugar does not come up quick enough when she drinks juice, or she does not easily wake up in the middle of the night when she's low or high.
This is why Sophia hopes she can get a service dog!
Today was the day! Sophia was finally about to fly in an airplane from her house in Florida to North Carolina to potentially meet her new service dog!
She was filled with all sorts of emotions, excited, nervous, and happy!
When Sophia walked into the room where all the service dogs were, one dog went right up to her and started nudging her with his nose- alerting that her blood sugar was climbing.
That dog was Duffy!
