Hello class! Today we will be learning about what a veteran is and why we celebrate Veterans Day!

What is a veteran?

A veteran is someone who has served in the military, whether they have fallen or are still alive.
There are six branches of the military. They are:

Army

Marines

Navy

Air Force

Space Force

Coast Guard
What is Veterans Day?

Veterans Day is celebrated on November 11th every year. On this day, we celebrate all of our veterans and the active military. We think about everything they have done for our country. Veterans and active military are our heroes!
What have veterans and the military done for us that make us thankful for them?

Veterans have protected our freedoms! Because of veterans, we have the freedom to express ourselves and speak out against injustices, freedom to choose our religions, freedom to be ourselves, and freedom to pursue happiness.
History of Veterans Day:
*Veterans Day was originally called Armistice Day.
*Armistice is when both sides of a war have decided to stop fighting.
*It was called Armistice Day because it was originally started to celebrate the end of World War I.
*It was renamed to Veterans Day in 1954 and was meant to honor all veterans and active military.
How can we honor veterans?
We can honor veterans all year! One way we can honor them all year is by waving the American Flag. We can also send care packages to troops currently serving our country. We can also thank veterans for their service any time we see one. On Veterans Day, we can do extra special things to honor veterans. On Veterans Day, we can write veterans letters, attend parades in their honor, visit the Veterans Affairs Office, or have a moment of silence in their honor.

That's it for today, class! I hope you learned a lot about Veterans Day and understand why we should be appreciative of veterans! Now go thank a veteran!
