Mexican American farm worker, union leader, and civil rights activist César Chávez brought better conditions for farm workers. Born on his family's farm in Yuma, Arizona, Chávez witnessed the harsh conditions that farm workers endured. The workers were routinely exploited by those who employed them, often unpaid, living in shacks in exchange for their work, without medical or other basic services.

Without a voice to unite them, they had no means to improve their position. Chávez changed that when he dedicated his life to achieving recognition of the rights of farm workers, inspiring them and organizing them into the National Farm Workers Association, which later became the United Farm Workers.
