Leopard geckos are reptiles. They belong to the Gekkonidae family.
So where do Leopard Geckos come from?
Well, Leopard geckos are native to semi-desert areas, such as Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, and northwest India. However today, most leopard geckos are bred in captivity. They have been bred in captivity for over 30 years.
Leopard geckos are one of the most commonly kept lizards. This is why so many are bred in captivity.

Where does their name come from?
Leopard geckos are named because of the irregular black spots that cover their body. As for the rest of their body, the dorsal area on their body ranges from light to dark yellow, while the ventral portion is white.

Although most leopard geckos mantain their coloring they can be found in many different sizes and patterns.
One cool fact about leopard geckos is that their tail is segmented. This means if part of their tail is lost they can regenerate it. Leopard geckos might drop their tail if they are afraid, or trying to escape a predator. Never grab a leopard gecko by its tail.

Although leopard geckos can regrow their tail, it may look different than before once grown back.
A leopard gecko's tail plays many roles, they use their tails to store fat. This is useful when there are periods where food is scarce.
They also use their tails to communicate. Their tail shakes whenever they are hunting, and shakes quickly when a male has noticed a female leopard gecko.
