You are a beautiful dancer and a beautiful person.

What a year of disappointments it had been so far for Elsamae! She missed seeing her classmates, she was getting tired of wearing a mask everywhere, and as much as anything, she missed going to ballet class at the ABC’s of Dance, a dance school run by her Grams. She thought to herself “I know I am so lucky in so very many ways. I have my brothers and sister to play with all the time. I have a big yard and a million dolls and toys, and I have many friends I can go see and they can come to see me. Not me or anyone in my family has the virus, and all my cousins and aunts and uncles are well, too. I still cannot help but feel bad about missing ballet – I only have a couple of years left, and I was looking so forward to working with Grams and I especially love the shows. We would get all dressed up in matching costumes and dance to the Nutcracker. It was so much fun.” And truth be told, Elsamae was not the only one missing dance class. Elsamae’s Grams had taught dance and put on the shows for over thirty years – much longer than Elsamae has even been around. Both Elsamae and Grams missed the music and the tutus and the people coming in and out of the basement dance studio – it made them so sad they agreed they should not even talk about it!
Like I said, Elsamae knew there were a lot worse things going on. Little boys and girls, their parents, but most of all their grandparents were getting sick. So sick that they were filling up hospitals and filling them up so fast the hospitals were running out of room. Doctors got together from all over the area to talk about what to do. It would take too long to build new hospitals, and as soon as the pandemic was over, they would all be empty anyway. All the nurses and doctors
were working so hard it would be hard to cover more space, anyway. No one would come up with a good idea. Finally, one of the local students spoke up and said he had to do a survey of everyone who had been in the hospital for a college class. Elsamae’s mom told her a survey was where you ask people a lot of questions to investigate something. After doing the survey, he looked at the results closely, and even asked more people to take a look at what he found. People from all over looked at the survey results and then went off in a room and studied them some more. Then they had a giant Zoom call with a whole lot of people. They had tables and figures and charts and graphs, and videos and all kinds of things put together. People guessed what this meant and what the meant and why this said this and that said that. Finally, the head doctor stood up and got a profoundly serious look on her face. “I’m sorry to say I never got a Zoom account, and we only have 2 minutes left to come to a conclusion before our 40-minute limit is up. In a few words, can someone tell me what all these numbers mean?” The student who conducted the survey was really nervous. He said “Well doctor, what it tells me is that when something happens to make people in the hospital happy, they get better right away. And they get so much better that we can send them home.”
Everyone thought that was a reasonable result, but also agreed it should be tested more. Now people were getting excited. Soon the hospitals were sending joke tellers and clowns to the hospital to make people laugh. The hospitals were sure that this would make people better and they would go home. But it did not work. Doctors looked at the difference between the people who got well and went home and those who had to stay. Pretty soon they came up with a theory. “We think jokes and tricks are fine, but the people who got better were people who got more than a little laugh, they got a warm feeling that lasted for a while, not like a joke that you laugh at and then forget about it. The doctors were not happy. “We have to come up with something to make a lot of people well or we are in big trouble. The hospitals are still letting people in and hardly anyone if going home. Come up with something!” they begged.
Elsamae and Grams were two people who always wanted everyone to be happy, and so they talked about it one Monday when Elsamae was visiting Grams. Grams had asked for a list of the people in Littleton hospital on the COVID floor, and she and Elsamae planned on sending them all get well cards. As they went over the list, they were surprised how many people they knew. “Why do we know so many of these people?” they both said at the same time. As they looked at each other, and their faces lit up. They each realized something. And over the next couple of hours, they came up with a plan.
Soon Elsamae was on the phone to all her friends from last year’s dance class. “I need a big favor.” She said and began to tell them about her plan. At the same time, Grams was on the move, pouring through her records from years gone by, and she made a long list for Elsamae. Elsamae called her class, then
