Blackbeard, nickname of Edward Teach, one of history’s most famous pirates and an imposing figure in American folklore. Apart from the luxuriant black beard which earned him his nickname, the most prominent aspect of the Blackbeard legend is his buried treasure. Blackbeard wasn't even the most successful pirate of his generation: that distinction would go to Bartholomew "Black Bart" Roberts (1682-1722) who captured hundreds of vessels and operated a large fleet of pirate ships.Blackbeard’s entire career as a pirate captain of Queen Anne’s Revenge only lasted 2 years, from 1717 to 1718.
