Hello, my name is Charles. I live on a
plantation with eight other slaves. I
think were in Alabama but i don't know
for sure, my owner wont tell us. I got
sold to Tom Baker when i was only five
now I'm 22, I've never seen my family
ever since that. My mothers name was
Tammy, and my father was her owner.
I was sold for twenty-six dollars.

I have a little idea on how my family got
here. I remember her telling me the story
on how she was just a little girl living with
here parent in a village in Africa. When
they were sleeping they woke up to
screaming and havoc. White men had
found their village and were going to
capture them and bring them to the
Americas to sell them as slaves. They had
to walk over twenty miles to the coast of
Africa to get on a ship to bring them to the
Americas.

When my mother was describing being
on the boat is sounded terrible. She said
that they were kept under the deck in a
little space with over forty people. My
mother told me on how they had little
food and some people didn't make it to
the Americas.

That sounds terrible I would never
want to have to be in that kind of
situation. We don't have to bad
here. Charles isn't the meanest
owner, but hes also not the nicest.
I'm a house slave with my good
friend Timothy. The other six slaves
that work the fields don't like us. They
always thought that we got treated
better and told Charles everything.

I've never really said or objected to
anything charles has told me to do.
Except, when i was seventeen. I was old
enough to no what i was doing and i
knew the punishment of it. I ran away. I
had been planning it for around two
months, and one day when i thought i
had perfect i did it.

I thought my plan was perfect but i
guest not cause i still here. Every
Thursday Charles leaves to go to the
pub to drink. He never came back till he
was really drunk, and that normally
took him a while. So one night when he
when of to town i thought i had to do it
and it was my only chance.

grabbed Timothy and we ran. It wasn't
that easy though. There was a white
man guarding the way out. It seemed
he wasn't moving and we didn't know
what he was doing. We waited still no
movement. After waiting around for five
minutes Timothy thought of something
we hid behind a bush and Timothy
threw a rock still no movement. We
moved closer and found out he was
sleeping.

We weren't done yet though. We still
had to escape to one of the North states
that was going to be a Challenge. We
travel 7 miles that light then we slept.
We didn't sleep go it was on wet grass
and used sticks for pillows. So it wasn't
very comfortable. So when we woke up
we took a look around. We didn't find
anyone so we kept going.

it was getting dark when we came
across the bigger town. There was a big
sign that said Leeds, Alabama. We
didn't know where that was but we
knew which way north was so we
quietly walked around the town. That's
when i saw a poster with a picture of
me an Timothy. It said wanted alive
reward 25$. You could tell by the look
on Timothy's face that he was scared.
