My grandparents are from South Korea. In 1966 my grandparents wanted to immigrate to a new country for a new start to their life. They wanted to leave because Korea wasn't a developed country yet. It was hard to get a stable job, and hard to support a family.
They wanted to immigrate to either Canada or the US. When they decided on Canada they made the hard decision for only my grandpa to go. At the time they didn't have enough money for 3 airplane tickets so my grandma stayed at home in Korea with her newborn son(my uncle).

At that time the Korean government wouldn't let their citizens take more than 50 Canadian dollars out of the county. My grandpa had to stay with his sister and her husband who had immigrated earlier, while he searched for a job. He slept on the kitchen floor.

Some reasons my grandparents wanted to come to Canada was for more opportunities, to raise a family, and for a better life. One big reason was that at that time in Korea there wasn't much hope for my grandpa's job. There was more opportunity for architects in Canada.

Finally, my grandpa saved enough money for my uncle and my grandma to come in 1967. In 1968 my dad was born and by this time my grandpa had a good enough job to support his family. Finally, my grandparents became Canadian citizens in 1972. At that time the Canadian government set a rule that you have to have lived in Canada for at least 3 years to become a citizen.
There were definitely a lot of challenges while moving to Canada but there are also so many benefits as well. Some challenges my grandpa had were having to learn a new language, finding a job, finding out how to use the TTC, facing a lot of racism, trying to get the rest of his family into the country, trying to get used to the new type of food like sandwiches and burgers. He didn't like the food but thankfully you could get rice at the supermarket.
Some benefits of coming to Canada is that it's a diverse country that offers its citizens many great opportunities, a low crime rate, and free health care, and more job opportunities. Canada is a wealthy country with many resources and industries. My Grandparents used some of these benefits to decide on why they would come to Canada.
