Though a Type One diabetic cannot stop the onset of his or her disease, the related stigma influences outsiders to believe that diabetes is the diabetic’s fault. The negative undertone associated with diabetes has a lasting effect on Type One diabetics. Emotionally, diabetics may want to forget about their diabetes, once it is regarded as a defect. Physically, diabetics may ignore the necessary treatment to avoid publicly exposing their diabetes. To solve feelings of shame, diabetics and the public should be better educated. This guidebook aims to teach and encourage newly diagnosed Type I diabetics to overcome the challenges posed by their disease.
