I rushed into my older brother's room and said, “Charlie we need to talk. Lately, there
had been a number of small toys, rubber balls, pens, and other small objects suddenly
missing from the our house.”
Charlie looked confused and said to me, “Johnny, why is this a big deal? We are missing
things all of the time.”
I told him that we needed to figure out what was going on before something really
important were to disappear.
Charlie had a unique talent for finding clues and solving mysteries. Several months ago
he was able to find Mom's lost wedding band, and just last week Charlie's keen detective
skills were able to identify the person who had been stealing our neighbor's newspaper each
morning. Like most younger brothers, I looked up to Charlie and often played the role of
his assistant in solving the mystery at hand.
Just as I was giving Charlie the update on missing items, we heard a scream down the
hall coming from my sister Janet's room. We quickly rushed to her room to see what was
wrong. She told us that her favorite teddy bear was missing. She had it with her last night,
put it down on the bed, left the room for breakfast, and when she came back, it was gone.
Charlie told Janet to calm down and stop crying. He promised her that he would find out
what had happened to her teddy, and if possible, bring it back to her. He then asked her to
tell us everything about where the bear was before she left the room, and what she found
when she returned from breakfast.

First Charlie went over and examined everything on the bed. During
his search he found a small clump of yellow hair on top of the sheets and
under the bed. He also spotted what appeared to be three very tiny drops
of blood that stained the sheets. I quickly pointed out to Charlie that
person who took the bear must of had a cut on the hand.
Charlie moaned, and said, "Maybe, or maybe not".
He continued his search throughout the room and found a small amount
of brown dirt sprinkled across the carpet.

After we left Janet's bedroom, Charlie and I proceeded to interview Mom and Dad,
and asked what they were doing between 8:30 and 8:45 this morning. Mom said that
she was cleaning the house, found a loose button on the floor, and then made
breakfast for Janet. Dad told us that he took out the garbage, let our dog Sparky out,
and picked up the newspaper in front of the house.
After speaking with Dad, I asked Charlie what was our next move. He said that he
wanted to go outside to see if we could find anything there that might help us solve
this case. We walked out of the front door, and looked around. It was a bright fall
morning, and the leaves had already started to fall from the trees. The lawn was
covered with a beautiful blanket of multicolored leaves.

That afternoon when we returned from school, Charlie asked Mom if he
could see the button that she had found on the floor earlier this morning.
Mom handed Charlie the button, and to my surprise, it wasn't a button at all.
It was one of the eyes on Janet's missing teddy bear. Charlie smiled, and did
not appear surprised by our recent discovery.
That evening, after dinner, Charlie told me to get to sleep because we had
to wake up early the next day.
