Let me tell you about how I came to have 

wings. 

One day I stepped up to the mirror to find two 

large wings protruding from my shoulder 

blades. 

My eyes widened and I ran out of the 

bathroom, but I stumbled into my mother. 

My eyes pricked with hot tears of shock, and I 

pushed past her. 

"Eve!" 

I ran onto the street, my mother's call chasing 

me out of the house.

People lashed at me, afraid, so I hit them away. 

A young child got knocked to the ground and 

her head hit the pavement with a loud, "Clunk!" 

Oh, God...

I thought I killed her...

I never wanted this to happen...

I... was a... monster.

I went to the mountains. 

I didn't want to hurt anyone else. 

Exhausted, I slumped down into the snow. 

I felt empty...

Soulless. 

Nobody would ever love me.

Nobody would ever look at me without 

wincing. 

"And what are you doing out here all alone?" 

A voice whipped towards my ears and I looked 

up. 

"Don't come closer... I-I don't want to hurt you." 

The boy laughed. "You look harmless to me." 

I gestured towards my wings, and wondered if 

he was mad. 

He smiled and started to bring his hands 

together, then brought one towards me. 

It held a small rocking horse... made of ice. 

"I'm Sam." He held his hand out to me. 

"Come with me. To a... school, I guess, for 

people who are different. Like me, and like 

you." 

I hesitated, then nodded. I didn't have many 

other options. I stood and followed him. 

We walked into a building, and I was instantly 

blown away. Three... people...ish... things stood 

in the doorway. They waved to welcome me. 

Sam walked over to a door, knocked twice, 

then waited, leaning on the wall. When the 

door opened, he grinned. 

"Found another one." 

"What type?" An elderly lady walked out.

"Angel. Like you."
