It was a tough time in America, when little
Elizabeth Eckford was born. America was
divided into two groups of people: the people
with white skin and the people with brown skin.
Elizabeth had brown skin.

Many of the white-skinned people did not like the
brown-skinned people. They did not like to talk to
them or be near them. They would not even let the
brown-skinned children go to school with white-
skinned children or drink out of the same drinking
fountains.

One day, that all changed. The people in
charge of making rules for all of America, said
that the brown-skinned children should be
able to go to school with the white-skinned
children.

This made Elizabeth very excited! Soon, she
would get to go to a new school. The new school
had better classes and would help her to be a
lawyer when she grew up.

However, the white-skinned kids at the school
Elizabeth wanted to go to, were not happy.
They did not want brown-skinned students at
their school.

The time came for Elizabeth to go to her new all
white-skinned student school. She and eight
other brown-skinned kids her age were going to
go together.

Soon, the day came for all the Elizabeth and
her friends to go to their new school. The
students planned to meet before school and go
to their new school together. But, they forget to
tell Elizabeth.

Alone, Elizabeth rode the bus to her new school.
When she got there, she found a big group of
white-skinned people waiting outside the school.

The white-skinned people outside the school were
very angry. They did not want the brown-skinned
students to go there. They yelled mean things at
Elizabeth and told her to go away and never come
back.
