Nicolas Guillen read a lot as a kid. Guillen's poems were about revolution, and from 1920 to 1930 he was very important for the Afro-Cuban movement. He was the national poet of revolutionary Cuba.

Nicolas Guillen was arrested and eventually exiled from Cuba because of his revolutionary poems and him wanting change for Cuba. 

Nicolas Guillen's father was an open-minded senator which led to his assassination by the government forces. However, Guillen still wrote pieces about the social problems experienced by the African people. This lead to him being arrested multiple times and eventually exiled however, he was not scared of the government and took a stand. This was very admirable.

Similar to the United states Nicolas Guillen faced the same racism issues in Cuba. Guillen wrote about the social problems that Africans faced and his first piece was in high school called Camaguey Grafico.
