8th Period
Mrs. Olson

Did you know that not too long ago women didn't have the right to vote? It wasn't until 1920 when the 19th amendment was put into the Constitution that women started to get some rights. The 19th amendment is what gave white women the right to vote everywhere. Before the 19th Amendment women had very few rights. Before the mid 1800s if two people got a divorce, the ex-husband would take custody of all the kids. Also before the mid 1800s women weren't allowed to divorce their husbands, and a little bit after the mid 1800s she could only divorce her husband is he was abusing alcohol. Despite their lack of rights, many women still tried to stand up for themselves and prove that they were just as good as men. For example, Sojourner Truth wrote the famous poem "Ain't I a Woman", Harriet Tubman who was the most famous conductor of the underground railroad, and Maria Mitchel was the first person to discover a comet by a telescope

The 19th amendment is considered the greatest achievement of Women's Rights at the time. The 19th amendment achieved suffrage for white women. Suffrage is another word for being able to vote. The 26th amendment allowed gave everybody over the age of 18 suffrage no matter race, color, gender, disability, or anything you can think of. The right for woman to vote was a heated debate within women's rights conventions. they debated whether or not they should add it in a document called the Declaration of Sediments and Resolutions. Some members thought it was too out there while others thought they couldn't get anything thing done without it. After many debates, they agreed on protesting and petitioning for women's rights. Finally in 1920, women got the much needed right to vote.

WOMEN'S VOTES ARE NEEDED!
WOMEN SHOULD BE ABLE TO VOTE!
WOMEN NEED RIGHTS!
The first famous Women's Rights convention was held in Seneca Falls, New York in 1848. Around 300 people attended, and about 40 of them were men! One of the most important topics of the convention was when they argued over a paper they created called the Declaration of Sediments and Resolutions. It was set-up like how Thomas Jefferson set-up the Declaration of Independence when they declared independence from Britain. The purpose of the set up was to show that they were declaring independence from what men thought women could handle. A woman named Elizabeth Cady Stanton was the person who thought that they should add women being able to vote into the Declaration of Sediments and Resolutions.
