Our world needs food. The farmers and ranchers give
us food. They grow the fruits, vegetables, and animals
to feed us.

Growing this food is not always clean when we make
the land ready and clean up after the growing season
there is a lot dirt that can be washed away. Our
animals make waste and this waste can dirty up lakes
by run-off.

When the dirt is moved from the farm, it makes it very
hard for us to grow food. When our water gets dirty
then our animals can get sick. We need to do what we
can to protect the water we and our animals drink.

A farmers job is to grow a lot of food.
They use fertilizers, pesticides, and
herbicides to help grow this food,
control bugs, and control weeds. The
problem is that too much of this can be
bad for you and me. These chemicals
can run off into our water which causes
to much algae. When it get out of
control it is an algae bloom.

Chemicals in our water are bad too. When too
many pesticides or other chemicals get in the
water the fish and animals that drink the water
can be harmful to eat. Polluted water effects all
the animals and plant that need clean water.

The Midwest was made up of grass and trees and now
is farms and ranches that require a lot of water when
plants and animals are growing. At times there are not
enough plants to soak up rain causing run-off. It can
be bad.

It is every ones responsibility to make sure we take care
of the land. Farmers should take care of their land so the
soil stays and the water doesn't get polluted. Everyone
should not put too much fertilizer in the grass.

Our animals and farmlands need water. This is called
irrigation. Too much or too little of this can be bad and
wasteful. If we waste too much there won't be enough
to water our plants animals.
