One day outside Vulcan Middle School (Go
Phoenixes!) where swim club was held, Jimmy
told his coach, "I found out this weekend that
freestyle burns 85 calories every ten minutes.
Can we have our workout today be just
freestyle, and can we calculate the number of
calories we burned?"
"That sounds like a great idea, Jimmy," Coach
said.

After telling her swimmers what the plan was for
the day, she put them to work.
"For warm-up," Coach said, "We are going to swim
freestyle for twenty minutes and calculate how
many calories we burned in that twenty minutes.
Practice is going to be three hours long today. We
will swim two and a half hours of it."
And so the swimmers started their warm-up. They
swam back and forth across the twenty-five yard
pool, doing their flip turns at every wall.

What's the equation?

The swimmers finished their warm-up when Coach blew her
whistle. She called them to the wall, and pointed out the
information she had written on the board.
"Notice how the burnt calories increase by 85 every 10 minutes,"
she said, "Can anyone predict the next twenty minutes of
swimming?"
Jessie spoke up, "In the next twenty minutes, we will have burned
a total of about 330 calories, if my estimation is close." By the
worried look on her face, she didn't think she was right.
"Right," Coach said, "But the actual number is 340, so you were
still close, Jessie. Now can anyone tell me the equation we will use
to calculate the number of calories we burn?" Coach was also a
math teacher at the high school.

What is the equation?
y=85x

"I know it!" Grace, one of the oldest swimmers,
called out, "The equation is y=85x."
Coach wrote the equation on the board. "Now, I
want you to do 20x100s on 2 minutes. Leave on
the next top!" she said.
For the next twenty minutes, the swimmers
swam their twenty 100 yard swims. That would
bring them to an hour of swimming.

Coach asked for the next numbers for the table
after the set was done, and four more
numbers were added.
She gave her swimmers the next set, which
would take another 40 minutes.

"We've burned 850 calories?" Chandra
exclaimed with her mouth wide open.
"That explains why I'm so hungry right now,"
Elliott said, "That's more calories than that was
probably in all the food I ate today!"
"I bet!" Coach said, "The next set will take
twenty minutes." She went on to describe it.
