Prince Edward Island! I'm going to tell you about
my homeland in eastern Canada. This is a really
cool place and I really love living here!

BIG QUESTION:
WHAT ARE THE FIVE THEMES OF GEOGRAPHY?

I will show you the five themes of geography and relate
them to Prince Edward Island.

THE FIVE THEMES ARE:
LOCATION
PLACE
MOVEMENT
REGION
HUMAN ENVIRONMENTAL INTERACTION

The Island is the little green
crescent in the circle.

Location helps you find a place in the world. There
are two types. Absolute Location uses latitude and
longitude to tell EXACTLY where a place is.
Relative location is how you would tell someone
where a place is.
Prince Edward Island is located at 46.3 degrees
north latitude and 63.5 degrees west longitude.
This is its exact, or absolute location.
You could say Prince Edward Island is located
northeast of New Brunswick, or south of
Newfoundland and Labrador, or maybe east of
Quebec, or north of the United States. This is its
relative location.

When you go to a new place, you want to know what it is like. What are the
people like? What is the weather like? What is the land like? Geographers
use Place to describe these things.
Prince Edward Island's climate is pretty cold during the winter, with a cool
spring, and a warm summer and autumn. They have some type of rain or
snow that falls all year round.
To get there by car, you have to cross the Confederation Bridge from the
New Brunswick mainland.
I, the Grasshopper, am one of many native animals on the Island, including
harp seals, salmon, and Atlantic puffins. Native plants include dandelion,
dock, and violet.

CBC

Movement describes how people and ideas
move from place to place. You can use a
vehicle to move people. The Internet,
newspapers, television, and social networking
also move ideas.
Prince Edward Island has a road system that
branches off from Confederation Bridge. It gets
its television and radio mainly from CBC
(Canadian Broadcasting Corporation). Before
the bridge was built, people traveled by ferry to
and from the island. Ferries are still used today.
The Islanders also have several newspapers that
are published right on the Island.
