
This is the story of an indigenous woman who resisted the colonisation of her territory. For several centuries she has been remembered in the department of Huila as an emblem as she not only represented resistance, but also because she was a woman who brought several indigenous communities to form a defence against "La Nueva Granada", the invading Spaniards.
At that time, Huila was considered as a paradise in which living human natives with various forms of social, economic, political, and cultural organization.
A period known as the "Regional Classic", when the most famous statues and burial mounds of San Agustín and Isnos were produced.
Her name was Gaitana, a brave woman who lived with her family on the banks of the Magdalena River. She had a son named Jedda, with the cacique of an indigenous village called Yalcón. It is said that this cacique died due to a spell when his son was only 17 years old and after this event, the son of the Gaitana took care of this village for 5 years. But, the tranquility of the natives was interrupted by the arrival of a group of Spanish colonisers looking for gold and productive land for their crops.
The spanish man in command was named Pedro de Añasco, a captain sent to conquer the unknown land and force the natives to work for them. This captain tried to sympathise with the caciques of the indigenous communities, but one of them refused to pay tribute to them, the son of the indigenous cacique the Gaitana.
When Pedro de Añasco became aware of Jedda's attitude, he got angry and sent for the Indigenous woman's son to beat him in front of the other natives. As soon as the Gaitana heard that her son had been taken away, she ran to the invaders and saw how the spaniards tortured her son until he was burned at the stake.
