1- My Story
When I was born at Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto on November 20th, 2010, my parents discovered that I had a hearing loss. When I was in daycare, I caught Roseola three times which affected my hearing, making it permanently worse each time I got it.

😭
I got hearing aids when I was 5 months old.
Unfortunately, I couldn't hear well out of my left ear because my hearing aid wasn't powerful enough. That is why my parents decided that I should get my first cochlear implant.
It was easy for my parents to decide to get the cochlear implant because I couldn't hear certain letters, such as s, k and ch.
My surgery took place in 2012 at Sick Kids Hospital. I was only 2 years old!

That's me, after the surgery. My ear was wrapped in a bandage. It's so big!
When my ear was healed, I learned how to hear using the CI. My mom helped me every day to learn how to listen and talk. After that, I was good to go. I was hearing perfectly well for 8 years!

In December of 2020, my parents and I discussed me getting a second cochlear implant. I had a few tests to see if I qualified - the results said...
YES!!
I can get two! I couldn't believe it. I was so excited to get it, but I was scared and nervous because I wanted to make sure I was making the right decision for my future.
I felt a little better every time I spoke to people, such as my doctor and my audiologist. She was helpful in answering all my questions. What helped me the most was talking to a girl who has two cochlear implants. She answered all of my and my mom's questions.
In June 2021, my parents and I decided to get a second cochlear implant.
I wrote about my feelings in a journal, which were nervous, happy, sad, and scared, all at once!
Two days before my surgery, I had to get my first COVID test because of COVID-19. I was so scared! After the test, my nose was tingling, but soon that feeling went away. I had to physically distance myself from other people until the day of my surgery.
July 8th, 2021 was the day of my surgery. I couldn't eat breakfast, but I could only drink apple juice and water. I went to the hospital and waited for a long time!
While I was waiting, I had to change to white hospital pyjamas. I also had to wear a blue cap and blue booties on my feet, like this:

That's me waiting, holding my favorite stuffy, Pinky.
Also, I got to choose my own oxygen mask smell. There were different smells and I chose strawberry.

That is what an oxygen mask looks like on my face. It was comfy and smelled yummy!
