
Sophocles wrote more than 120 plays during his life. He was born into a very rich family. His dad made armor for a living and lived in Colonus, a small village close to Athens.
Sophocles was a straight-A student and was at the top of his class. He was known for his athletic abilities and his personal beauty.
At the age of 16 he helped prevent the threat of the invasion to Grecce by leading the formal celebrations in praise of the naval victory over the Persians.
He was an actor for some part of his life and received some fame and recognition but he abandoned acting in favor of civic and religious duties, in addition to his writing
He was later elected a proboulos,who was one of 10 officials charged with overseeing the finances of the city.
The tales of the death in 405 B.C.E., are also mythical. According to one account, he was choked by a grape. According to others, he died either when publicly reciting Antigone, or from excessive joy at some dramatic victory.
Sophocles was given a post of responsibility in peace and in war by the Athenians.He was a general and a priest after his death everyone worshipped him as a hero.
