To M.Crockett because she made me do this <3

Once upon a time there was a war called the Civil War, after the Civil War, the area west of the Mississippi River was settled by miners, ranchers, and farmers.
People were still looking for ways to get rich. Miners made money quickly and then gambled it away. Once all of the ore from from the mines were gone, the towns turned into boomtowns then became ghost towns.
In the 1850s, railroad companies searched for a way to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean. This was an enormous challenge for them. Their work was hard and pay was low. Most Union Pacific workers were Irish immigrants and African Americans. Most Central Pacific workers were chinese immigrants.
Chinese workers endured poor working conditions, and faced discrimination. The chinese workers ended up moving to the U.S. in the 1850s to get out of poverty and social unrest.
Then there was the homestead act, not all settlers took part in homestead. Some bought land themselves for cheap.Up to 160 acres of land were given to a family who agrees to pay a $10 fee and agree to live on the land for five years.
