Have you heard the saying
"an apple a day keeps the doctor away?"
That's because apples as well as other fruits and vegetables contain vitamins and nutrients that help fuel our bodies for the day.
However, vitamins are not the only thing our bodies need in order to function properly. Macronutrients which consist of carbohydrates, protein, and fat all contribute to make sure our bodies stay healthy.
It is important that we fuel our bodies with the right amount of nutrients because too much or too little can cause problems.
An imbalance of nutrition can result in undernutrition (malnutrition) or overnutrition (obesity). Both of these are considered to be serious health problems.
Malnutrition can be a result of many things some of which include poverty, medical conditions, lack of knowledge regarding nutritional intake, and or behavioral, social, or sensory-related issues. Many states offer assistance of some type to help those who are in need and qualify.
Much like malnutrition, obesity has many contributing factors. Too many calories and not enough physical activity, genes, as well as behavioral issues and the media. Encouraging children to be more active and offering other nutritional foods can help combat obesity.
Portion size is another huge factor when discussing nutritional issues. In America, the average portion size is exceedingly larger than it is supposed to be and people consume more protein and starches than on the contrary.
