Lucy and Robert are 9 yrs. old. They are in third
grade. Lucy and Robert love to play video games, so
they spend most of their time inside. They love to eat
junk food, and their parents don't really mind.
But lately Lucy and Robert have been feeling really
tired. They don't have the energy to do much. Lucy
has been feeling sad because she is being teased at
school because she is overweight. And Robert, every
time he tries to run, he gets out of breath really
easily.
Lucy and Robert decide to tell their parents what they
have been feeling. Their parents decide to take them
to the doctor.

At the doctor's office, Dr. Scott asks the children to
describe what they've been feeling. Lucy and Robert
begin to describe that they've been feeling tired,
that they run out of breath really easily.
The doctor checks, Lucy and Robert's weight,
height, blood pressure, and listens to their hearts.
Dr. Scott asks the children what kinds of food they
eat, and what activities they do on their free time.
They tell him they love to eat burgers, pizza, and
candy. And they're favorite activity is playing video
games all day.
He then tells them, I think I know the problem. So
he grabs his notes and starts to explain.

The doctor tells Lucy and Robert that they have
something known as obesity, childhood obesity.
But what does this mean? Lucy and Robert want
to know, and begin to question the doctor.
Dr. Scott tells them that obesity is the state of
being seriously overweight (overweight is when
you have too much body fat) - to a degree that
affects your health. And some of the health
problems you might get are asthma, fatigue, and
high blood pressure.

Dr. Scott describes some of the effects of obesity. First, the doctor talks
about asthma. When your lungs are normal, the air goes in and out easy.
The tubes inside your body that carry the air in and out of your lungs are
round and open and clear. When you have asthma, you breathe in while
running, your lungs get all tight, and make thick, sticky stuff called mucus.
That’s why it's hard to breathe, and you feel like coughing.
Next what does fatigue mean? Fatigue is when you feel tired and weak. You
have no energy to do anything. And your muscles feel too heavy to move.
Last, Dr. Scott talks about high blood pressure. The human body has blood
vessels that supply blood to every corner of our body. Blood vessels that
carry blood filled with Oxygen from the lungs, from the heart to the rest of
the body is called the Arteries. Blood pressure is the force with which blood
is pumped from the heart, and travels though the major arteries of your
body. When this pressure is too high over a long period of time it puts
pressure on the walls of the arteries, and that begins to create problems.
