Once there was a boy named Santiago, he was a shepherd visiting a village.
Santiago had been having the same dream over and over again and while he was in this village he wanted to go visit a gypsy as they could interpret dreams and tell him why he kept having the same one.
When Santiago reached the village he decided to see a gypsy to tell him what his dreams meant as he kept having the same one. The gypsy informed Santiago that he would be finding treasure in the pyramids, which is what he kept dreaming about, and made him promise a part of his fortune to her.

While still in the village, Santigo met an old man, who revealed himself as a king.
This king gave Santiago advice to follow his dreams and talked to him about how each hero has a journey and this was the beginning of his. The old king also told Santiago he shouldn’t be promising his fortune to others when he doesn’t have it yet and gave Santiago two stones, Urim and Thummim, which represent yes and no to help him on his journey.

With new encouragement and hope from the old king, Santiago decided he was going to travel to the pyramids to find his treasure. Unfortunately, to pay for this journey, Santiago had to part with his beloved sheep.

Santiago sets off on his journey and reaches a city called Tangier.
There, he goes into a bar, where he meets a new friend. He explains to this new friend how he is trying to go to Egypt to go to the pyramids to find his treasure and since his new friend is a local who speaks the same language as Santiago, he says he will help Santiago find his way to the pyramids.

Santiago gives his new friend the money he got from selling his sheep and they go into the market to buy camels to get to the pyramids.
Santiago gets distracted by a beautiful sword and when he turns around, his new friend and money are nowhere to be found.

Santiago realizes he has been robbed and he is left with only a few of his belongings including the stones the king gave him.
After crying, Santiago falls asleep in the market and is awoken the next day by a shop owner.
