Once upon a time there was a beautiful young prince named Ferdinand who lived in a kingdom far away with his stepfather.
His stepfather, the king, was also very beautiful, but arrogant and proud. He spent all day looking at himself in the mirror. The mirror was magical and when he stood in front of him, he asked him:
-Mirror, mirror, who is the most beautiful of the kingdom?
Then the mirror answered:
- You are the most beautiful of all men.
The king was satisfied, knowing that his mirror always told the truth. Over the years, however, Ferdinand’s beauty and kindness became more evident. For all his good qualities, he greatly surpassed the physical beauty of the king. And he came at last one day when the king asked again:
-Mirror, mirror, who is the most beautiful of the kingdom?
The mirror replied:
-Ferdinand, to whom his goodness makes him even more beautiful than you.The king was filled with anger and ordered the hunter’s presence and said:
-Take the young prince to the forest and make sure the wild beasts take care of him.Deceitfully, the hunter led Ferdinand into the forest, but as he was about to do the king’s bidding, he tookpity on the handsome young man and said:
-Run, go away, poor boy. Find a safe place to live.
Alone in the great forest, Ferdinand ran as far as he could until nightfall. Then he spotted a small cabin and went into it to sleep. Everything in the cabin was small. There was a table with a white tablecloth and seven small plates, and with each plate a teaspoon. Also, there were seven small knives and forks, and seven small jugs filled with water. Against the wall were seven small beds, side by side, covered with bedspreads as white as snow.
When it was dark, the owners of the hut returned. There were seven dwarves digging and extracting gold and precious stones in the mountains. They lit their seven lanterns, and observed that someone had been in the hut, for things were not in the same place.
The first said, Who sat in my chair? The second said, Who ate from my plate? The third said, Who bit part of my bread? The fourth said, Who took part of my vegetables? The fifth said, Who used my fork? The sixth said, Who used my knife? The seventh said, Who drank from my jug?
Then the first one noticed a wrinkle in his bed and said, Someone has gotten into my bed.
And the others went to check their beds, saying, Someone has been in our beds too.
But when the seventh looked at his bed, he found the prince sleeping peacefully and called the others:
-Oh my! - They whispered. What a lovely boy.
When dawn came, the prince woke up very frightened to see the seven dwarves standing in front of him. But the dwarves were very friendly and asked his name.
-My name is Ferdinand, he replied, and he told them all about his evil stepfather. The dwarves accepted the prince to stay with them.
Time passed and one day, the king decided to consult his mirror and discovered that
the prince lived in the forest. Furious, he poisoned an apple and took on the appearance of an old man.
- A bite of this apple will make the prince sleep forever-Said the evil king.
The next day, the dwarves went to work and Ferdinand was left alone.
Soon after, the king disguised as an old man approached the kitchen window. The prince offered him a glass of water.
-You are very kind, said the elder. Take this apple as a gesture of gratitude.
The moment the prince bit the apple, he collapsed. The dwarves, alerted by the forest animals, arrived at the cabin as the king fled. With great sadness, they placed the prince in a glass urn. They all hoped that the beautiful young man would wake up one day.
