Some botanists are professional scientists. They might set up special equipment in a laboratory to find out how a particular plant grows. Or they might spend a lot of time out in fields and woods, looking for special kinds of plants. Even today, botanists are still discovering plants no one else knew existed!

But not all botanists are professional scientists--some are simply people who live around plants and study them for different reasons.
