Water Cycle

I am a water droplet. I fell from the sky one day when it started raining. I am a form of precipitation. Precipitation is when so much moisture accumulates that I cannot remain suspended in the clouds. This begins my story.

I go through a process called transpiration. Transpiration is when plants absorb me and release me back into the atmosphere.

I can take on many different forms throughout my life cycle. I can turn into a gas through a process called evaporation. Evaporation is when I convert into water vapor and get released into the atmosphere. Solar radiation is responsible for this process.

When I am water vapor, I can produce condensation. Condensation is when latent heat is lost and I turn back into a liquid. I went from a liquid to gas and back to a liquid in these few steps.

I supply water to plants and animals through a process called infiltration. I am absorbed through the soil and continue on my journey.

If too much of me falls from the sky, a process called surface runoff is used. I am directed to a river or stream and gravity helps to guide me there. Because of this, I won't overflow and hinder agriculture.

Once I fall from the sky, I seep into the ground and become groundwater. As groundwater, I supply most US cities for domestic and irrigation usage.

Thank you for coming along on my journey. As you saw, I have many uses and it all starts with me as a form of precipitation falling from the sky. I can take on multiple forms and continue to help move along the water cycle which helps humans thrive.
