Author's Note
Australia's population is growing rapidly, with more and more people moving in and getting born here, we have to make sure that our water supply can keep up with this population growth. We will struggle to provide enough water for the new population, this book will explore the ways we can try to keep up and provide water for the future generation.

Australia has big cities, with Sydney and Melbourne having over 5 million people in each of the cities.
This means we need to provide water for lots and lots of people, this is very hard.

Our cites are growing and growing, and are becoming even bigger than they already are.
It has been predicted that Sydney and Melbourne will have 8 Million people by 2050.
This means that we will need more water, so we have enough for the amount of people that will live in Australian Cities, Otherwise we will not have enough water to go around.
The problem is, how will we do this? It is not as simple as you may think.
One thing the government is starting to do is recycle water. The water we use for the shower or the dishes can go to a special place that cleans the water and removes most of the germs.
The main problem with this is it is very hard to clean it enough for us to drink, so the water is only used for firefighting, watering garden, and to water some plants.
Because of this we have to have two pipes, one with the fresh drinking water, and one with the recycled water. These pipes have to go to every place that will use the water, this makes it had to add, and expensive.
There is another way to avoid running out of water is to use a desalination plant. This takes water from the ocean and takes the salt out of the water, so it is safe to drink.
This also does not need us to put a separate pipe in everywhere, because we can just put the water into the main pipes, we can drink this water.
The problem with this is the desalination plants need lots of electricity and power to push the water through the filters. Because power is expensive, the plants can cost around $73 million dollars per year to pay for the power it uses.
If it costs lots to run, it means the water bill will go up in price.
A third option could be to make more dams. The dams are a great option, and are cheaper than most desalination plants. The dams catch the water that rains, and stores all of it for us to use.
This avoids the water going into the ground and going to waste. We are currently using dams to catch our water, but would more fix the problem?
Dams need rain to get their water, and whilst they are good in lots of cases, if we have a few months without much rain, the dams will run low and if it is our only water source, we will face problems with our water supply.
They also take up lots of space, and most large cities don't have lots of space to use for this.
